How I Unplug
Practice what you preach, right?
We talk a lot about unplugging so that we can connect with family, friends and the world around us. But disconnecting also helps us to reconnect with ourselves - physically, emotionally and spiritually. That’s why I’ve incorporated Pilates, meditation and essential oils in my life.
So, how do I “hug” myself?
I practice Pilates.
I started practicing Pilates because I was looking for an exercise program to support my cardiovascular health, strength, endurance and flexibility. (And let's face it, I needed a way to get back in shape after having my daughter.) Additionally, because I have lower back pain and sciatica, I also needed an activity with therapeutic properties.
Practicing Pilates, I realized an additional benefit. It gave me a sense of calm, inner peace and focus, particularly upon losing my brother unexpectedly the day before my daughter was born. The practice gave me peace, time to think and space where I could listen to my body and soul.
My love of Pilates inspired me to become a certified instructor, which allows me to share this amazing exercise with friends and family. In my studio, Align Pilates, I see my clients transform both physically and spiritually. It’s so gratifying.
I meditate.
Balancing a family, the hustle and bustle of daily life and several businesses, I realized that I needed a way to center myself to maintain focus and clarity. So, I started a meditation practice where I set aside time every day to sit with my thoughts.
Meditating made managing my busy life so much easier. I started with guided meditations. Here are some sites where you can find some great ones:
-
From Doreen Virtue, a spiritual healer and psychotherapist: Angel Therapy
-
From Deepak Chopra, a world-renowned expert in alternative medicine: The Chopra Center
I use essential oils.
I’ve always been interested in finding alternative therapies to traditional medications because I think about the long-term effects of pharmaceuticals, especially on my daughter (and my dogs!). Of course medications are absolutely necessary to treat many illnesses and conditions. But I wondered if there were other ways to treat common ailments, naturally and effectively .
Upon doing lots of research, I found essential oils to be a gentle and safe way to treat so many things - colds, allergies, headaches - even depression and stress. Another great benefit of essential oils is that we can use them as chemical-free alternatives to household products - cleaning solvents, health and beauty items and more.
In fact, my daughter and I often make ‘bath bombs’ using rose, lavender and orange oils. A great way to get clean, and a fun activity to do (and way to unplug) together!
I found DoTerra Essential Oils to be the most pure oils on the market. And, I’ve had so much success using them that I became a DoTerra representative so that I can share their amazing healing and calming properties with my friends and family.
